How to keep your furry family safe during stormy season

Winter in the Western Cape isn’t just about cosy blankets and hot drinks — it also means heavy rain, icy mornings, power outages, and even flooding in some areas.

As part of Pet Preparedness Week, we’re reminding all pet owners to take a few simple steps to make sure your pets are safe, warm, and protected no matter what winter throws our way.

Step 1: Create a Winter Emergency Kit for Your Pet

Just like the rest of the family, your pet needs a go-bag in case of emergencies. Keep the following together in a waterproof container:

✅ A few days’ worth of food and water
✅ Any medication your pet takes regularly
✅ A leash and harness or pet carrier
✅ Blankets or a warm towel
✅ Poop bags and a spare litter tray
✅ A copy of vaccination records (especially if you need to evacuate to a shelter)
✅ A toy or something familiar for comfort

Step 2: Keep Pets Warm and Dry

Cape winters can be wet and bitterly cold. Help your pets stay warm and cosy by:

  • Making sure outdoor kennels are elevated, insulated, and waterproof

  • Bringing pets indoors during storms or cold snaps

  • Using jackets or jerseys for short-haired or elderly dogs

  • Drying off wet fur and paws after walks (to prevent chills or skin issues)

Step 3: Prepare for Flooding or Power Outages

Many parts of the Cape are at risk of flooding during big storms. Here’s how to plan ahead:

  • Know your area’s flood risk and have an evacuation plan

  • Never leave pets behind if you need to evacuate

  • Keep your vet’s details and emergency numbers on hand

  • If your pet has health needs (like diabetes or epilepsy), keep spares of their medication in a grab-and-go pack

  • Have a backup heating source or extra blankets in case of load-shedding or power cuts

  • Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date, in case they need to be kenneled temporarily.

Step 4: Make Sure Your Pet Can Be Identified

If pets get frightened during storms or if you need to evacuate, there’s a risk of them getting lost. Make sure:

  • They have a collar with an up-to-date tag

  • They’re microchipped, and your contact details are current

  • You have a recent photo of your pet to help with identification if needed
