What if going for a run could help prevent hundreds of unwanted puppies and kittens?
That is the idea behind K’s for Spays, Cottage Vet Clinic’s fundraising initiative that is turning kilometres into sterilisations for animals in need.
Our team of runners will be taking on the Winelands Marathon, but this time we’re running for more than a medal. Every kilometre completed represents an opportunity to raise money towards sterilising dogs and cats whose families may otherwise not be able to afford the procedure.
And this is where we need your help.
What Is K’s for Spays?
The concept behind K’s for Spays is wonderfully simple:
We run the kilometres. You sponsor them. Together, we fund sterilisations.
We have 26 runners taking part in the 10 km and 21 km events, giving us an incredible 414 kilometres to sponsor.
Every kilometre is available for sponsorship at R100 per kilometre.
You can also sponsor half a kilometre for R50.
That means you don’t need to make a huge donation to make a difference. Lots of people sponsoring just half a kilometre or one kilometre can collectively create something significant.
Our challenge is simple:
Can we get all 414 kilometres sponsored?
Where Does the Money Go?
The funds raised through K’s for Spays will be used to help sterilise pets in our community.
As veterinarians, we see first-hand the consequences of uncontrolled breeding.
Every year, welfare organisations and communities are faced with unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. Shelters become overwhelmed, families struggle to care for unexpected litters and far too many animals ultimately find themselves without homes.
Sterilisation tackles the problem before it starts.
It also has important health benefits for individual animals, including preventing potentially life-threatening uterine infections and reducing the risk of certain reproductive diseases.
Through K’s for Spays, we want to use the skills and resources we already have as a veterinary team to make a practical difference.
How Can I Sponsor a Kilometre?
We’ve tried to make supporting K’s for Spays as easy as possible.
You can contribute:
R50 – Sponsor half a kilometre
R100 – Sponsor one kilometre
Or, if you’d like to make an even bigger contribution, you can sponsor as many kilometres as you wish.

Why Sterilisation?
One sterilisation may seem like a small intervention, but its impact can extend far beyond one animal.
Preventing one unplanned litter prevents those puppies or kittens from going on to produce further unwanted litters of their own.
Sterilisation also offers important benefits for the individual pet. Depending on the animal’s sex, age and circumstances, it can prevent unwanted pregnancies and diseases of the reproductive system and reduce some hormone-related behaviours.
Most importantly, responsible population control means fewer unwanted animals competing for limited homes and welfare resources.
That is why K’s for Spays isn’t simply about raising money.
It’s about prevention.
Why Are We Running?
At Cottage Vet Clinic, we spend our working lives caring for animals once they become sick or injured.
But veterinary medicine is also about preventing suffering before it happens.
We wanted to create a fundraiser that reflected that philosophy while bringing our team, clients, friends, families and wider community together around something positive.
So we decided to run.
There will undoubtedly be tired legs, questionable decisions somewhere around kilometre 18 and a few people wondering why they ever signed up.
But every kilometre will be worth it if it means another pet can be sterilised.

Absolutely.
